James Holmes, the accused gunman in the Aurora, Colorado, Batman theater shooting, was formally charged this morning with 142 violent offenses. These include 24 charges of first-degree murder (2 for each death) and 116 counts of attempted murder.
The 24-year old, who police claim acted alone, gunned down patrons of a crowded movie theater in Aurora during the movie premier of Batman’s “The Dark Knight Rises.”
12 people died and another 58 were injured during the attack.
If convicted of even one count of first-degree murder, Holmes will either face life in prison or death. It is unclear at this time if the Denver District Attorney will pursue the death penalty.
